The Truman Show

Every year Oslo Pix film festival organises a number of free screenings as a part of Gratis utekino program. In the Birkelunden park in Grünerløkka, on Tuesday the 25th of August, the festival screened The Truman Show.

I saw the movie first time in the beginning of 2000s. At that time I was young and stupid (now I am only stupid) to really go deep in the mening behind the movie. Since then, a lot of things happened in our world. While there is no physical dome, like in the case of the movie, to encapsulate our thinking and steer our behaviour, we do have a digital dome, which to be honest is far more dystopian reality we live in.

The last scene from The Truman Show

Our emotions, health, shopping habits, … , absolutely everything is monitored and controlled constantly, due to our 24/7/365 connection to the Internet via “smart” phones, and our obsessed usage of social media networks (which are actually using us). We live in a 2D digital self-imposed imprisonment. We cling to it, even though we know it has a negative impact on our physical and mental health. Due to fear of for example losing SoMe “connections”, we never leave this fake world, and thus never fully experience life.

The choice is there, it does not hurt to be disconnected, but the controlled world is a preferred choice over freedom, because freedom comes with responsibility.
